    Rapid Testing Information

Here is our Principal, Ms. Sloane, receiving the rapid test

    https://youtu.be/TthGznosujM

    Quick Bullets-

    • We need to test 20% of all staff and students that enter the building who give consent.
    • We will only test with consent. We will notify those selected for testing 24 hours in advance. Nobody will be excluded from school as a result of their choice not to be tested.
    • Test results will be available in 15 minutes. Positives will be isolated in designated health office areas and will need to be picked up as soon as possible, as is the protocol currently for students showing symptoms. Those testing positive will need to follow up with their medical provider prior to returning to school.
    • THE TEST IS EASY AND NON-INVASIVE! Monroe County is providing the tests and the training. This is the simple, quick, shallow nasal swab test.

The Monroe County Department of Health recommends the following

    • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
    • Practice physical distancing and stay home when sick.
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Avoid touching your face.
    • Cover your cough or sneeze using a tissue or your sleeve.
    • Clean and disinfect frequently touched services.

    Report Cards

First quarter report cards will be mailed home on Monday, November 16th. Keep an eye out for them and reach out to any teacher if you have any questions about grades or what steps can be done in second quarter!

If your son or daughter qualifies for High Honor Roll or Honor Roll - certificates will be ready after Thanksgiving.

If your son or daughter has an incomplete or INC on his/her report card, please reach out to that teacher asap. The teacher should have already reached out to you, but in case they didn't please email or call them. An INC means that your son or daughter did not master the learning needed to pass the first 10 weeks of that course. The learning needs to be demonstrated to the teacher before a grade can be assigned.

    EIMS Weekly Update

    November 9th- 13th

Report Cards Are Ready Next Week!

The Grading Period ends Tuesday. Teachers have until Friday to enter the grades for students. For the first quarter only, report cards will be mailed home. After that please make sure you are signed up for the Parent Portal, as that will be the platform you are able to view report cards on in the future. We need you as parents/guardians to review your child's grades, talk with he/she about areas of strength, and areas of improvement. Please pay special attention to anything marked incomplete or missing - That means your child missed learning in the first quarter and has to work with their teacher to complete it

As a staff, EIMS believes, our parents/guardians are vital partners in educating our students. After reviewing your son/daughter's grades, we recommend setting one or two goals for second quarter. Thank you for being a partner with us as we work together in educating our Lancers.

Town Hall Meetings - Join Us!

We are holding a virtual town hall meeting this Tuesday November 10th . Our hope is to build a format to communicate about EIMS each quarter and answer any questions that may be on your minds.

    Lancer News

    November 2, 2020

    Dear Families

What a great Red Ribbon Week we had at EIMS. Thanks to Chuck Dossier and Eileen Ferrari for organizing the week, of course with the support of our PTSA. Thank you to all.

We are coming to the end of the first quarter. If you as a parent have not check your parent portal, please do this asap. All missing assignments that you see in the portal are equated to missed learning. If students don't make up the learning and finish the essential assignments prior to the end of the quarter, your child may end up with an Incomplete. If your child receives an Incomplete, they will need to commit time to complete the learning with their teacher(s). If you are still not using the parent portal, call Jacqui Walker @339-1436 and she can assist you with gaining access to the parent portal.

In addition, November 23rd and 24th are parent conference days, no school on either of those days for students. If interested in a parent conference contact the counseling office and they will forward you to the correct team leader. The counseling office number is 339-1405.

EIMS is participating in the United Way - 21 Day Racial Equity Challenge

The staff at EIMS is learning and dialoguing about racial equity, and what role can we play in creating equity for all. The Rochester United Way developed a Racial Equity Challenge. This link will take you to one of the many readings the United Way as offered. This link offers tips to parents on how to speak to your child about race. The District is fully committed to developing a broader understanding of equity in our staff, students, and community members. To quote the article, "The act of discriminating against others starts young. Children can differentiate race as early as six months, and the days of teaching kids to be “colorblind” are behind us. Talking about race and teaching the benefits of seeing color will help our children see and embrace the beauty that comes with diversity." Please take time to read this article and discuss with your child or children at home. The Benefits of Teaching Children to See Race

    Lancer Families

This week is Red Ribbon Week!! Thanks to the hard work of our Health teachers, Mr. Dossier and Ms. Ferrari, along with our EIMS PTSA contact Ms. Pacheco, the planned activities are fun and include educational material about the negative impact of substances. Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States. It began as a tribute to fallen DEA special agent Enrique Camerena in 1985. This week has a long history in our school communities and we are proud to take time to dedicating this week to the why we shouldn't use substances for our Lancers. This is one week, but I can assure you that our staff spends 365 days a year educating our young minds as to the negative impact substances can have. Make sure you remind your child to join in the fun, but take time to speak to them about the why substance should not play a part in their lives. This year's national theme is; Be Happy, Be Brave, Be Drug Free. Go Lancers!

They will be pulled from 7th and 8th period classes. If you are an in-person student who still wants your picture taken, please tell your 7th or 8th period teacher and they will write you a pass. Remote learners will be able to come in after school on 10/28 2:30 to 4:30. Please enter the door by the gym, in the back of the school.

Our Theme of the Week: Check For Missing Assignments!!!!!

    Why Check for Missing Assignments?

    Hi Lancer Families,

5 Weeks has ended!!!! Progress Reports are available through the Parent Portal in our student management system, called Infinite Campus or IC. If you have not signed up for the Parent Portal, we need to get you signed up. Not already set up on the Parent Portal - just call Jacqui Walker at 339-1436. EIMS teachers give homework, classwork, or tests/quizzes, to evaluate your child's learning. Missing assignments are a huge issue!!! If your child does not turn their assignments in or complete their tests/quizzes, there is no way for a teacher to accurately assess what your child has learned, and they could end up with a failing quarter grade. It is very important that as a family you stay connected to the parent portal.

Parent Suvery - thinking about returning to school??? We hope so!!!

You are receiving this survey in the link below to let us know if your student will be CHANGING instructional models for the second marking period on November 9, 2020. Only fill out this form if students in your household that would like to CHANGE INSTRUCTIONAL MODELS. Please fill our this form by October 23, 2020. September 30th - mid week update

    Hello Lancers Families!!

A mid-week email with important news:

    • It is SPIRIT week next week and I forgot to add it to the SMORE – so very sorry.  Spirit week is so much fun.  Each day has a different focus and whether you are an  in-person or a remote learner you can participate.  Each day during homeroom teachers will take count each person who is dressed up and aligns to the day – then they will nominate best dressed for the day to one of the administrators – then we will pick daily winners.  The winners will get a lunch of their choice from Salvatore's.  Should be fun – so please encourage everyone to participate.  Go Lancers!!!
      • Monday, October 5th – Favorite Sports Team T-shirt, Hoodie, or Jersey Day
      • Tuesday, October 6th – Hat and Hood Day
      • Wednesday, October 7th – Wacky Wednesday – you should not match…..
      • Thursday, October 8th – PJ Bottoms Day
      • Friday, October 9th – Lancer Gear Day – show your Lancer Pride!!!!
    • While I have your attention – please check IC as 5 week grades are coming out soon.  A reminder, last spring we graded students T (turned in) M (missing) and I (incomplete).  That will no longer be the case this school year.  Grades will be given based on work completed and assessments, and the scale is 0 – 100.  Please check in with your son/daughter to make sure they are not only signing on to TEAMS when remote learning, but are completing the assigned work.  THANKS
    • At approximately 8:40 each day the attendance office will be sending a Talking Points to let you know if son/daughter is absent from class. If they are in class, you won’t get this message.  This Talking Points is another way for us to keep you informed about the actions of your son/daughter.  We want them in their classes learning!!!!!

    • Just a thought? Have you completed the 2020 Census? If not, there is still time! Fill out the Census at 2020census.gov by October 5. The Census happens only once every 10 years and is extremely important in determining funding for our community that supports schools, social services, road repair, healthcare, and more. Be sure to count everyone that lives at your address, related or not. All kids and babies born by April 1, 2020 count too!

We appreciate the support from all of you!!!!

    Chris Sloane

How to Tell If there is a Substitute

When a teacher is absent, a substitute is not able to connect with the remote learners. Therefore all staff who need a substitute have been asked to post a message and directions for the students for that day. If there is a substitute teacher, students should find an announcement in their posts in that specific class/team they are on in the teams app. It should look something like this example supplied by Mrs. Johnson - notice this is under POSTS.

    Big picture

Please Help Out with these Reminders:

    • Please make sure your son/daughter is symptom-free before returning to school after they have felt sick
    • We need everyone to make sure your iPad settings are on LIGHT mode appearance. To check that you have the correct setting selected, please now go to your SETTINGS app on the home screen of your iPads. Next, select "DISPLAY & BRIGHTNESS". The appearance that should be checked here is LIGHT. If yours is on DARK, you need to change it now. We are experiencing many problems with student iPads on DARK mode, so it is an expectation that your iPads stay on LIGHT mode. Please be aware that if your son/daughter does his/her work on DARK mode - they will not be able to send it to the teacher to view - therefore the work done will be lost.
    • Students should be coming to school on the days are assigned - yellow-group 1 or purple-group 2
    • If your child is a fully remote learner and missing class due to illness, we still need you to call the attendance office. 339-1407 is the correct number for the Attendance Office
    • When at home for fully remote learning or hybrid remote learning, students will not be invited to SAS. This is their time to have study hall at home and do work. They do not need to report to SAS for attendance.
    • Teachers are inviting students to classes, but we did find a glitch in TEAMS which randomly blocks the invite. We are working on fixing this issue. If your child is unable to click on an invite to a class, please call 339-1436, and we will notify the teacher to resend that invite. We apologize for this issue and hope to have it settled shortly.
    • It is important to review the process if your son/daughter should get sick in school and demonstrate one of the COVID-19 symptoms. To be more specific, if your child has a temperature of 100 degrees or above OR demonstrates fever, chills, shortness of breath, sore throat, loss of taste/smell, headache, cough, nasal congestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, muscle or body aches. If your child has to be sent home - you will need to contact your health care provider and receive a negative COVID test prior to returning to school.
Please note your child will need a negative COVID test to return to school as required by Monroe County Department of Public Health

    8th Grade Washington Trip Canceled

We thought it best, before we begin to schedule fundraisers, to announce that we are in fact canceling the 8th grade trip to Washington. We do not have confidence that a trip like this will be safe for our students, as we can not currently predict the impact COVID-19 may have on our community over the next year. We know this is disappointing, but promise to plan a fun end of the year trip for the class when our circumstances with this health crisis improve. Thank you for your understanding.

Do you have any EIMS books?????

    Another helpful set of steps:

Connecting with East Irondequoit's Schools While Learning From Home

    1. Connect to the internet or mobile hotspot.
    2. On the first login screen put in username First initial, last name, graduation year. (ex: jsmith25)
      • Password for elementary and GRADE 6 their school prefix followed by their student id number. (ex: ig999999 or de999999). For grade 6 students the school prefix is the school they attended LAST YEAR. If you don't know your child's student ID, please call the school.
      • Password for secondary is unique to each student. If your grade 7-12 student does not know their password please call the middle or high school and ask to be transferred to the Student Helpdesk.
    • 3. Open Microsoft Teams and put in networkusername@student.eastiron.monroe.edu (ex: jsmith25@student.eastiron.monroe.edu) and same password as above.
    • 4 Open your Teams calendar (toolbar on left hand side) and click "join" on the first class for the day.
    • 5. Teachers will be able to help you from there!

    Lancer Families!

    Good morning everyone,

We continue to get a calls about two topics, so let me clarify SAS and being invited to class. In addition please read about FREE food and what happens is your child is sent home from school ill. We hope you have a great week!!!!

    • Please let your child(ren) know that the cost of breakfast and lunch is nothing. Yes until Dec 31st, breakfast and lunch are FREE. The Federal Government extended the "free meals" initiative. Menus are posted on the website already, and you will notice the number of choices is limited. Please go onto the Parent Portal in IC to order lunch or your child can order in homeroom. Link to ordering https://www.eastiron.org/orderinginstructions No need to order Breakfast as there is only one choice in the mornings. From the EI website: In these new challenging times, it is best if families utilize our FREE “cashless” system MySchoolBucks. It is the safest, healthiest, and easiest way to pay for your child’s purchases in the cafeteria.www.myschoolbucks.com.

    • It is important to review the process for if your son/daughter should get sick in school and demonstrate one of the COVID-19 symptoms.

Fall 2020 - What will this week look like?

    Hello Lancer Families,

This newsletter continues to explain how we will start the school year. We know you might have questions, we have set up Town Hall meetings for 7th and 8th grade parents, which are listed below.

    • All students enter the building with a mask.
    • Students who ride buses will be dropped off starting at 7:20. All students will go directly to their homeroom.
    • Students who are being dropped off will now be at the NORTH parking lot - not out front. Please do not drop off until 7:35 as we need to stagger the amount of students in the hallway.
    • First period will not start until 7:41 am, to allowing all students to get into their homerooms.
    • As students enter all students will get their temperature taken at our new temperature stations.
    • If they have a temperature above 100, they will be ask to sit in the cafeteria until the nurse does a second reading. If the temperature is below 100 they will move to class, if not you will be contacted to pick them up.
    • No lockers will be assigned to any student to keep the hallways clear for appropriate social distancing.
    • Breakfast stations will be in the hallway for a grab and go breakfast as the students move to homeroom
    • Students will attend either AB days (group 1) or CD days (group 2) - a color coded calendar for the first month was sent home with your student’s schedule last week if you chose the hybrid option.
    • Students will attend classes, moving only among their own teams. Team Lightning students will stay in the south end of the building - Team Thunder will stay in the North end of the building.
    • Lunch will be in classrooms. Students will order in when in homeroom, and again will be guided out to the lunch stations set up in the hallways.
    • After classes are complete, bus riders will be called down to their bus for dismissal starting at 2:15. We will then dismiss those being picked up and walking home approximately at 2:30.
    • For the first two weeks of school, there will not be an option to stay after with a teacher. Week three, students will be able to stay after with a teacher only by appointment. This is due to the fact we will only have a limited number of seats on the bus due to COVID 19 stipulations.

This should give you some sense of the day. As questions arise please feel free to email them to me at chris_sloane@eastiron.monroe.edu.

Please remember that you will receive an invite from your teacher for your class via Teams. Below are two videos, one about signing into to Teams, and the other is how to find your email.

Fall 2020 - What will it look like?
