Over the past few days, a new social media “challenge” has made its way to East Irondequoit. There is a TikTok challenge going viral that is affecting school campuses across the nation, that is encouraging students to vandalize schools in several ways and promotes these ideas under the tag, "Devious Licks." TikTok is a video-sharing social networking app that students are using to post videos of students stealing various school items such as soap dispensers, toilet paper holders, mirrors and more. While these TikTok challenges are primarily happening in school bathrooms, they can happen anywhere on school property.
We are reaching out to you today to ask that you talk to your student(s) about this destructive trend. There is no place for this type of behavior. It does not demonstrate the attributes of a good citizen and will not be tolerated at school.
While TikTok videos are generally harmless, “challenges” such as this one and the Tide Pod challenge from a few years ago are examples of how dangerous ideas can be spread on platforms like this.
Our hope is that we can partner with parents/guardians and students to stop this destructive trend from happening on our school property. If you or your children know of students engaging in this challenge you are encouraged to contact your building principal. Being aware of your student’s activity on social media is something that should be taken seriously. For help please go to the Online Safety tips page on our website: https://www.eastiron.org/Page/5987
