Today was our PBIS Winter Day complete with hot cocoa! Add this with Mrs Barrett’s 5th grade Reading Buddies to Mrs Duquette’s 3rd grade readers and you have the makings of a Ton of Fun! #kidshelpingkids #We_Are_DE

It was a Bills Day today at DE! Students created #3 badges in support Damar! One even made one for Mr Roach for his Dolphins Jersey. I was more than happy to wear it! Damar continues to touch so many in such a positive way, even 3rd graders! #compassion #kindness #DEKidsRock

Ahead of #MLKDay, Ms. Menelas and Miss. Kim's 5th grade class at DE completed a project called, "What Would it Look Like if Martin Luther King, Jr. had an Instagram?"
Students first took part in a classroom gallery walk through where they analyzed photos of MLK during the civil rights movement, using them as project inspiration in order to accurately capture what he may have posted to his own Instagram if it were possible when he was alive. #WeAreEI
What a creative project! More photos here: https://eastirondequoit.smugmug.com/Durand-Eastman/2022-23/MLK-Project-MenelasKims-class

We celebrated our DE PURPLE STUDENTS OF THE MONTH yesterday! Work Hard, Have Fun, Do Good!
Empathy was our theme for the month of December!

Meet Sgt.Ketterer (Retired). Mrs Zielinski’s and Mrs. Centola’s class wrote letters of appreciation back on Veterans Day to Sgt. Ketterer, who is a friend of Mr. Roach’s from way back in middle school! Well, we finally got to do our video meeting and he shared about his time in the Army, deployments to Iraq, Bosnia, etc. and he answered questions about military life! He was so grateful for student letters! You can even see them on his wall! Great day! Great role model!

Happy National Mentorship Month! Thank you to EICSD staff members who are involved in our mentorship programs and volunteer time out of their week to make a difference in the lives of our students. Here are just a few of our mentor and mentee duos in action! #WeAreEI

Consider taking a trip to the Irondequit Public Library this week to check out a project by Durand-Eastman fourth graders called Honoring Irondequoit's Indigenous People. It is on public display in the children’s section starting tomorrow through Dec. 4. Thank you to STEM teacher Katie VanEps and library media specialist Cheryl Jakobovic for organizing this project.
Here are some photos of students developing the project from start to finish – you will see that the different recorded presentations can be accessed by QR code! More here: https://eastirondequoit.smugmug.com/Durand-Eastman/2022-23/Indigenous-People-Project

Merry Christmas from all of us at DE!

Our DE Students wrote cards and letters of appreciation to medical staff at Gollisano Children’s Hospital. Pictured are the Chief Nursing Officer, Director of Pediatric Nursing, Director of Family and Community Outreach and a DE Student. What a great 12 days of kindness!

DE had an exciting sing-a-long this afternoon, with special guest Jennifer Johnson, Director of Family and Community Outreach at Golisano Children’s Hospital. She collected all the holiday cards students made for the health care workers at Strong Memorial Hospital. Students also spoke about various holidays celebrated during the winter season and sang traditional songs from many of the holidays. The teaches did a surprise dance for the audience and the event ended with the announcement that the students had a snow day tomorrow!! See all the fun here: https://eastirondequoit.smugmug.com/Durand-Eastman/2022-23/Winter-Sing-a-long/ #WeAreEI

December has been a busy month! Classes throughout the district have been learning about holidays celebrated throughout the world.
