The EIMS Biotechnology Club recently explored the exciting world of genetic engineering by working with bacteria to produce Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). GFP is created using a gene originally discovered in jellyfish and is widely used in science and medicine to help researchers observe molecules in motion.
This hands-on experiment also mirrors the real-world process used to produce insulin for diabetics, giving students insight into how biotechnology directly impacts human health. If successful, the experiment will result in transgenic bacterial colonies that glow bright green under UV light—a powerful and memorable demonstration of genetic engineering at work.
This enriching learning experience and the Biotechnology Club are sponsored by a grant from Corning Inc., whose support helps make advanced scientific exploration possible for our students.

The class also welcomed a special guest, Mr. Williams from Garber Webster, whose support through adopting Ms. Davis’s classroom helps make hands-on, engaging learning experiences like this possible. Thank you to everyone who helped turn history into an adventure and made today such a fun and meaningful experience for our students! https://eastirondequoit.smugmug.com/Middle-School/2025-26/BHM-Pirate #LancerLEAD
